In its 87th
year, the Sunbury Show went ahead in 2007 without horse events, due to the
threat of the equine influenza outbreak across Australia.
Organisers of
the event, the Sunbury Agricultural Society Committee, were faced with the
difficult decision to exclude horses from the event in order to ensure they
were responsible and took into consideration the jeopardy it would place on
the industry as a whole.
Despite the
absence of horses, organizers are hailing this year’s Sunbury Agricultural
Show a success despite attendances being down by approximately 15 per cent.
Approximately
400 exhibitors and their entourages - 1200 people in total - usually attend
the show. Mr. Tony McMahon, Committee President, said that despite the drop
in attendance, the 7000 plus visitors to the Show exceeded his expectations.
The day was
great with the weather holding out and the crowd enjoying the activities and
entertainment available.
The
rock-climbing wall, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the dog, sheep dog trials and
the amazing Snakebuster were all very popular.
Other
well-attended exhibits included the poultry and cattle stalls and the pet
parade and the display put on by the Macedon Ranges Car Club. Sunbury radio
station 3NRG broadcast live from the event. Once again, the Ute Competition
was very popular.
Winner of the
Fred Watts award for most outstanding Agricultural Society Member was
Stewart McPherson for his 20 plus years of service as Ground Steward.
Rodney Quarrell
won the Douglas Duggan award for providing the most outstanding service by a
volunteer – as master of ceremonies.
All in all,
everyone had a fantastic day. Congratulations Sunbury Agricultural Society!
Thanks also to the many volunteer committee members who assisted in the
organisation throughout the year and on the day of the event. |
